Which RV to Choose for Travel and Life on the Road

VanFossens in their truck and trailer on the Matanuska Glacier, Alaska.

I’m constantly asked which vehicle or trailer to choose when making a decision to take your camera and life on the road. My answer never varies. Here it is.

There are a lot of articles out there with one view or the other on what type of recreational vehicle you should choose for travel. I’ve found a lot of them very bias.

I take a more open approach. The key is to choose one that works for you. Seriously.
Removing the old fridge from our trailerIf you have all the money in the world, it doesn’t matter, you can choose anything you want as long as it fits where you want to go and what you want to do. If you are pinching pennies, this still applies. No matter how much money you have or are willing to spend, it boils down to the fact that the RV must take you where you want to go and help you do what you want to do.

First, the differences. A motor home has an engine and is open from the front to the back. A Class C is a motor home open from the front to the back with a van or truck cab “combined” into the RV. A camper is carried on the back of a truck and there is rarely an access point between the truck and the camper. A trailer has no engine and is pulled by any vehicle. A fifth wheel trailer has no engine and is towed by a truck. Below those you have a variety of vans and sleep-in-the-car configurations.

  • If you need to travel with a lot of stuff and you like luxuries, then motor home or big trailer.
  • If you want to travel lightly and feel the road closely, motorcycle or bicycle with a tent.
  • If you are physically fit, go with trailer (5th wheel or otherwise) or truck and camper.
  • If you aren’t physically fit, go with Class C or A motor home.
  • If you want to stay high in the mountains, backwoods, BLMs, rugged terrain, and off road, then tent, small trailer, class C, anything under 26 feet in total length is the only way to go.
  • If you are traveling to big parks, then anything goes but if you are in big campgrounds and trailer parks, they don’t like crap vehicles. Some won’t take trailers only motor homes.
  • If you are staying on the road for weekends, go cheap. If you only travel during summer, go cheap.
  • If you wish to plant yourself somewhere and explore from there, a motor home or Class C with a toad (tow vehicle) is essential.
  • If you are only going to go with friends and family for short trips during good weather and not long distance, go light, small, and easy on everyone.
  • If you travel with animals, buy with room for them in mind.
  • Can you sleep and walk in it? If you are tall, a bed across the width won’t work without a slide-out. If ceiling, door frames, and lights are low, tall people will need to stoop.
  • How much time will you spend inside as opposed to out? The more time you spend inside, the more luxurious, roomy, and comfortable it should be.
  • Traveling with small children? Remember they grow up fast. Plan for them.
  • How many bodies will travel with you? The more the merrier and the more the larger.
  • If you need to make frequent “pit stops,” buy a motor home or Class C for quick pull overs to use your own pit without leaving the vehicle.
  • If you are going to cross the continent a few times, choose a strong heavy axle RV made for hauling, pulling, or towing. Engine and tires will matter most.
  • If you are living in this full-time, makes sure it is durable, weatherproof, all season, and comfortable.
  • If you have a hobby or job you are taking with you, make sure there is room enough for you and the tasks, and the RV is secure enough to protect your investments.
  • How long are you going to actively use it? A year, two, eight, twenty? We got sixteen years plus out of our 2-year expected usage with a lot of time spent fixing it up and maintaining it, so look long not short and buy accordingly.

NEVER under-buy or underestimate the pulling capacity or weight bearing capabilities of whatever you are considering. Buy a tow vehicle that exceeds the need to pull the trailer. Buy a trailer or motor home to carry at least double your anticipated weight needs (you always add more than you should).

That’s all you need to know. Answer those questions and you will narrow down your choices quickly.

Aerial Cat Babysitting

DJ in the tree coming face to face with the climber by Lorelle VanFossen

DJ in tree as tree climber grabs him - by Lorelle VanFossen

DJ stuck in the top of a tree with arrow pointing by Lorelle VanFossenIn the fall of 2010, I showed up in Dallas for OpenCamp having slept only a few hours a night for the past week. I told my friends that I had been an aerial cat babysitter, hosting the neighbor’s young cat 150 feet up in a tree in my “yard.” They didn’t believe I owned trees that tall. Well, I do.

For three days I kept hearing a cat crying around the house. We wandered all over the property looking for him. On the fourth night, Brent and I went out late with a flash light hunting for the meowing cat that kept us awake during the night. I kept circling the same tree with no luck, sure he was there somewhere in the brush, caught on a piece of barbed wire left from when this was agricultural land, with a tree limb on him, something. Nothing.

On instinct, I swung my flashlight up and two sparkling eyes shone down from about 100 feet up in the tree. Crap. (more…)

First Stray Sock Dolls

Sock dolls handmade by Lorelle VanFossen

stray socks book oneWalking through an Asian bookstore, I feel in love with Stray Sock Sewing: Making One of a Kind Creatures from Socks. What a delight! I’ve made dolls on and off through the years but these were adorable. Above are my first attempts at making the stray sock dolls.

Stray Socks Sewing Book tooIt didn’t take long before I found the sequel, Stray Sock Sewing, Too: More Super-Cute Sock Softies to Make and Love, and went even more bonkers, which I will share later.

I took both books with me to Arizona where my step-mother and I had a great deal of fun, including making one for Alan Dean Foster. They were given to the local children’s hospital.

What I love about making these is that while the patterns get you some fantastic creature shapes, it’s up to you to choose interesting socks and the details that customize the final creature. With little effort, every one is completely unique, and always adorable and huggable.

You don’t need to know how to sew or even use the sewing machine. If you can thread a needle and know how to stitch a hem, you can make these imaginative stuffed dolls, animals, creatures, and who-knows-what.

My only warning so far is to NOT overstuff the animals. Most fun socks are also made cheaply and the yarn stretches, leaving gaps and openings in the material revealing the stuffing. I chose very cheap socks for my initial projects, found at Goodwill which often features new socks not just used. I found a huge collection of different colored and sized brand new socks at Goodwill for only a couple dollars a pair. I found more for a dollar each at the local dollar store.

If you are looking for a great crafty thing to do for the child-like people in your life, or for a fundraising craft project, consider these two books as great resources.

Cherry Tree Blossoms, Seattle Arboretum

Cherry Blossoms, photograph by Lorelle VanFossen

The Seattle Arboretum is a glorious place to wander year around, but in the spring, the rows and rows of flowering trees are wonders to behold.

I often led many nature photography tours in and around Seattle’s most famous park, a long green belt that starts near the University of Washington and Museum of History and Industry, along the ship canals between Lake Union and Lake Washington, and runs for 230 acres along the Lake Washington waterfront, all the way to Madison Park area.

This was taken many years ago during one of the first photo excursions I led to the Arboretum. I had set up my camera for the participants and students to see how they could control the background by using the blossoms of the tree itself to frame the petals of interest, creating a blur of pastels. Along the way, I snapped a few pictures as teaching slides, but this particular one fascinated me.

This image has been used on book covers, posters, note cards, and just as artwork in addition to it holding a special place in many of my photography workshops and classes. It makes a great teaching point, but it is also just lovely to look at.

Just reminds me that you never know when you press the shutter, what the future of that image will bring.

Arctic Ground Squirrel in Grasses

Arctic Ground Squirrell, Alaska, photograph by Brent VanFossen

You can’t travel up to Alaska and through Canada without running into the ubiquitous Arctic Ground Squirrel.

Brent found this cooperative ground squirrel near our campsite in Alaska, a brown fuzzy creature against the lovely green grasses in the background, dotted with buttercups.

Photographing these animals is like “shooting fish in a barrel,” as my father used to say. Those that survive close to the campgrounds have become accustomed to people and allow you to get fairly close to photograph them.

Unfortunately, many people treat them like pets and feed them, which encourages them to be a little too comfortable with humans, increases their population as they don’t have to venture far into predator territory to get their food, and encourages bad behavior such as scrambling through garbage, digging into tents, cars, and RVs to chew up wiring and pipes, biting, and just being a big nuisance.

When Brent was working with this fuzzy guy, there were high overcast clouds allowing a soft gentle light on his subject, allowing the lovely texture and detail of the squirrel’s fur to be clearly seen. While he could have gotten closer, he worked with his 500mm lens to stay back. This also helped to compress the background and foreground to better frame the squirrel in the field of green.
